Website Speed for Small Businesses: The Fixes That Matter Most

Find out why your small-business website may feel slow and which improvements are worth prioritising, from images and scripts to hosting, caching and mobile testing.

A slow website can make it harder for potential customers to understand what you offer, view products or services, find your contact details, or complete a purchase. The problem can be especially noticeable on mobile, where people may be using a weaker connection or an older device.

That does not mean every site needs a rebuild or an expensive hosting upgrade. In many cases, a few well-chosen changes can improve the experience considerably. The key is to identify where the delay occurs and fix the issues that matter most to your customers.

First, check whether the site is genuinely slow

Start with the pages customers are most likely to visit:

  • Your homepage
  • Main service or product pages
  • Your contact page
  • Booking or enquiry forms
  • The checkout, if you sell online

Test these pages on a normal mobile connection, not just on your office Wi-Fi or a fast desktop computer. Open them on a phone and notice what happens. Does the page appear quickly but images take a long time to load? Does a pop-up block the content? Does the page remain blank for several seconds? Is the form slow when you try to use it?

Speed-testing tools such as Google PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse or similar services can help identify possible causes. Treat their results as diagnostic guidance, not as a final verdict. A test score is a controlled measurement made under particular conditions. It is not the same thing as a real customer’s experience on a different phone, browser or connection.

A lower score may point to useful work, but chasing a perfect score can lead to changes that make little practical difference. Focus first on delays customers can actually feel, particularly on important pages.

1. Resize and compress images before uploading

Large image files are one of the most common causes of slow pages. A camera photo may be several thousand pixels wide and several megabytes in size, even though the website only displays it at a fraction of that size.

Before uploading an image:

  • Resize it to suit the space where it will appear.
  • Compress it so the file contains less unnecessary data.
  • Use a sensible format supported by your website, such as WebP where appropriate.
  • Keep the original file separately in case you need it for print or future use.

For example, a full-width banner does not usually need to be uploaded at the maximum resolution produced by a modern phone or camera. Product and service images should also be large enough to look clear but not much larger than the display area requires.

Ask whoever manages your website whether it automatically creates smaller image versions for phones and different screen sizes. This can prevent a mobile visitor from downloading a large desktop image unnecessarily.

Do not remove images simply because they are large. Good images can help customers understand your business. The aim is to use the right dimensions and file size for the job.

2. Be careful with video and animated content

Video can be useful, but placing a large video file directly on a page can create a substantial loading burden. This is particularly true if it starts playing automatically or appears high on the page.

For many small businesses, embedding a video hosted on a specialist service is more suitable than uploading the original video file to the website. You can also use a still image or thumbnail that loads first, allowing visitors to choose whether to play the video.

Review videos on your homepage and landing pages. Ask whether each one helps a visitor decide what to do next. If it does, keep it but consider how it loads. If it no longer reflects the business or receives little attention, removing it may be more useful than trying to optimise it.

3. Review plugins, scripts and third-party tools

A plugin is an add-on that provides a feature, while a script is a piece of code that helps a page perform a task. Examples include analytics, chat widgets, booking tools, review feeds, pop-ups, advertising tags and social media buttons.

Each extra feature may add work for the browser. Some third-party tools also require connections to outside services before they can display or become interactive.

Make a list of the extras on your key pages and ask:

  • Is this feature still needed?
  • Does it help customers or the business enough to justify its cost in speed and maintenance?
  • Is it used on every page when it only needs to appear in one place?
  • Is there an older tool doing a job that another tool now handles?

Do not simply delete plugins, tracking code or scripts without a backup and a test plan. A plugin may control forms, payments, backups or other important functions. Remove or replace one item at a time, then check the site on desktop and mobile, including forms and checkout where relevant.

4. Consider hosting and the website setup

Hosting is the service and server environment where your website runs. If the server takes a long time to respond, pages may feel slow before images or other content even begin loading.

Hosting can contribute to performance, but it is only one part of the picture. A busy shared server, outdated software, poor configuration or a complex site may all play a role. Moving hosts can help in some situations, but it will not fix oversized images, excessive scripts or an inefficient page by itself.

The same balanced view applies to different website platforms. WordPress, page builders, Shopify, WooCommerce and hand-coded websites can all perform well or poorly depending on the specific setup, content, integrations and maintenance. A hand-coded site is not automatically faster, and a site using WordPress or an e-commerce platform is not automatically slow.

Before paying for a rebuild or hosting move, ask for evidence about the cause. A useful review should distinguish between a server response problem and delays caused by the page itself.

5. Understand caching in plain English

Caching means saving copies of certain page resources so they do not need to be created or downloaded from scratch every time. It can make repeat visits and common page requests quicker.

Many websites use browser caching, server caching or a caching service. These approaches can reduce repeated work, but they need to be configured carefully. If the cache is too aggressive, customers might temporarily see an old version of a page after you make an update. If it is not working correctly, it may provide little benefit or interfere with forms and personalised content.

Always test the website after changing caching settings. Check updated text and images, navigation, forms, logged-in areas and checkout functions. If you are unsure which settings are safe, ask your website manager or hosting provider rather than changing several options at once.

6. Test mobile and prioritise high-intent pages

A visitor on a phone may have less screen space, less processing power and a less reliable connection than someone using a desktop computer. Test the mobile version of your most important pages on more than one device if possible.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Whether the main content appears without a long wait
  • Whether buttons and forms respond promptly
  • Whether pop-ups cover the page or are difficult to close
  • Whether images push the content around as they load
  • Whether phone numbers, directions and contact details are easy to use
  • Whether the shopping basket and checkout work correctly

A slight delay on an obscure old page may matter less than a delay on your main service page or enquiry form. Fix the pages closest to a customer’s decision first.

A practical fix-first checklist

Use this order to make progress without turning performance work into an open-ended project:

  1. Test the homepage, key service or product pages, contact page and checkout on mobile.
  2. Record what feels slow and note any patterns across pages.
  3. Resize and compress the largest images and review video loading.
  4. Remove or limit unused third-party tools, plugins and scripts, with a backup first.
  5. Ask whether hosting or server response is contributing to the delay.
  6. Review caching settings and test that updates, forms and purchases still work.
  7. Make one meaningful change at a time and retest after each change.
  8. Keep a simple record of what changed and whether the customer experience improved.

This approach helps you spend money where it is most likely to help instead of paying for a collection of vague “speed improvements”.

When professional help is worthwhile

Get help if the site remains slow after obvious media and script issues have been addressed, or if you cannot identify the source of the delay. Professional support is also sensible before making changes to a complex e-commerce site, removing unfamiliar code, changing hosting or altering caching settings.

Persistent failed updates, broken forms, checkout problems or a site that is difficult to maintain are also signs that a broader technical review may be worthwhile. That does not necessarily mean a complete rebuild. The right solution might be better maintenance, a hosting change, simpler page content or a targeted technical fix.
